I want pdfs to open in individual windows. I want photos to open in one window. HELP.

As I prepare for classes, I peruse science papers. I open the pdf files and I choose whether or not to print them. To my shock I find the printer has printed every pdf file that is opened. It turns out that they are all present in the bottom of the Preview window displaying the paper I am reading. I can change the settings such that each pdf be opened in a single Preview window which would solve my problem. But then I've opened another horrific can of worms, as when I select a 100 images and double click on one of them to open -> yeah, a hundred Preview windows are openned. Why can't one set in preferences that pdf documents should open in single Preview windows and images should open in one preview window. THAT was how it used to be. Let me repeat. THAT WAS HOW IT USED TO BE. Now it has changed and worsened my life as a course director.

I have Mac OS 10.8.5. Preview 6.0.1 Is there a way out of this ****?

First, why you write this in this forum? Here is all about OS X 10.9.x called Mavericks, not Mountain Lion.

Regarding your "problem". You can hold down the Option Key on per use basis. If you select more files and you hold down the Option Key during opening, all selected files will open in the same window. As an example, if you have a directory with 20 pictures and you select all, hold down the Option Key, click on one of the selected pictures and all pictures will show up in the Preview dialog. On the left you will find a sidebar on which you can select every single picture.
