Why is mail is confusing senders?

Same problem here. Started with Mavericks. When restaring mail, it displays correctly for a few seconds, then refreshes to an incorrect display.

Try rebuilding the mailbox.

Select the associated mailbox in the mailbox list, then Mailbox menu, Rebuild.

Good idea, but it did not work. Rebuilt mailbox (an Exchange server), restarted Mail.

Same symptom. Displays correctly for a few seconds after restarting Mail, then reverts (in the middle column, the receiver's name shows up as the sender. The preview pane on the right is correctly displayed. Very strange.

Try a brute force rebuild.

As always, make sure you have a viable backup before attempting any maintenance like this.

Close Mail.

Go to ~/Library/Mail/V2/MailData/ and delete the Envelope Index files.

Open Mail and it will rebuild.

Another good idea, really! But the same thing. Brute force rebuild, then restarted Mail. Good for a few seconds. Then the Sender's name is suddenly replaced the receiver (usually me).

Sorry, I have no experience with Exchange servers. It might have something to do with that, but I don't know.

Being that it is an exchange server, you should be able to delete the account, then recreate it. Since all the email is on the server, it should be somewhat seemless.

Thanks, I did try this also - deleted the account from Mail.app, then readded it. Same symptom - after a few seconds, the display "refreshs" and instead of showing the real sender, the first recipient is displayed as the sender....

Go to the website for your Exchange server, do you see the correct emails there, or is it the same as Mail displays?

Yes, it is correct on the Exchange server via web interface. And mail displays correctly on my various IOS devices. Seems to be a keychain problem, as deactivating keychain on the affected machine seems to fix it.

I still cannot find a solution to this weird problem, any ideas welcomed.

This came up after upgrading to Mavericks. Using Mail.app, w multiple mail accounts. It only happens with my sole Exchange account.

Upon opening mail, the display is correct for several seconds. Then the screen seems to 'refresh', and the sender's name in the middle pane is replaced by the name of the first recipient. If I switch to a different mail account, then back to the Exchange account, the display is again correct for a few seconds. This phenonenom also affects spotlight search by sender in an irritating way, since when the display changes, the result of the search clears.

Have tried: rebuilding mail index, both from within mail and brute-force (deleting the files); deleting the Exchange account from within mail, then adding it back in.

Also deleted the Exchange account, then readded it back in. Same.
