safari slow

Surfing the web and using web browsing applications are incredibly slow or rather stunted. It keeps getting “stuck”.

I can’t type full words without the “spinning rainbow ball.” Other things that often bring up a spinning rainbow: opening a new tab; going to a new website; clicking between browsers; scrolling.

It’s like my computer gets stuck or confused on one thing, than works fine. Once the ball goes away it runs smoothly. Sometimes it works just fine for up to 5 minutes.

Also, my iTunes will stop for a brief second periodically. And restarting the computer takes way longer than it used to.

When I turn my wi fi off, my computer works swimmingly, except for the iTunes issue.

Let’s see. I have run Sophos, which found an OSX:Geonei file. I deleted all files associated with it. Ran it again, and it didn’t come back.

MacScan cleaned up a few dozen tracking cookies. Disk Utility cleaned up a few printer file inconsistencies. ClamXav found nothing. These used to take a few minutes to run, now they take almost 24 hours.

I get a lot of (not responding) when I try to force quit web browsers.

During these “spinning” sessions, which last anywhere from a few seconds to a few minutes, my CPU Load on my Activity Monitor barely goes above 5 percent.

All my applications are updated. I turned my firewall on. I reset my modem and router.

I’ve been messing with this for about a week. Simple solutions don’t seem to solve my issue. Other Macs in my house work fine.

I’ve put everything of note on a hard drive and backed it up on the iCloud ready to reinstall everything, but I’m hoping there’s a less drastic solution. But it took me about 20 minutes to get to this site, so here's hoping for some help.

I'm running OSX 10.9.2

Try running the Mac without Sophos and McScan.

1. Power cycle

Power off the router. Unplug it from the wall. Wait a while.

Plug it back to the wall. Power the router on. Wait until all the lights are lit properly.

It will take a while.

Restart the computer.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar.

Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Hopefully I won't get myself in trouble with this by posting private information.

This string had "Failed" in it. Perhaps that's important.
