I changed my email and consequently changed my apple ID on my computer. However my Iphone will not let me change my apple ID. It keeps the old ID (ie old email) and asks for me to sign in with that one. Of course, this one does not work and I now cannot update anything or use the app store as I no longer have a working apple ID on my phone.
What can be done?

Sign out of the old ID (Go to Settings/iCloud and tap Delete Account) then sign in with the new ID. Note that the Apple ID does not have to be a working email address; it is just a user ID to Apple.

Since the apps were purchased on the old Apple ID they are linked to it permanently. You will be prompted for the old ID for updates.
You need to delete those apps and redownload/purchase them with your current Apple ID to stop the prompts.
Did you update your Apple ID to your new email address?
That's not certain. If you simply change the email address for your Apple ID the apps will be associated with the new email address. But if you create a new Apple ID instead of just changing the email address then yes, all of your content will still be tied to the old Apple ID. and your incoming iMessages will go into the bit bucket.
There is no "Delete account" option at the iCloud site, so your instructions are not helpful to me. Am I missing a step?
