This is after an attempt to send a photo that wouldn't go through so I canceled it. Which meant I went into the list of my texts and closed out the one with the person that was having the issue. Have even restarted phone. And now I think I'm having trouble sending and receiving any messages.
This has happened to me before. It's a glitch. Possibly from messages you've already opened. At any rate, what you want to do is either
Double click the home button and close the messages application all the way (swipe up for iOS 7)
Or
Reboot your whole iPhone (hold down the home and power buttons until you see the Apple logo on your screen--ignore the swipe to turn off bar)

Hi! Thanks for the response, I have tried closing the messages for double tapping the home screen, also did what you suggested and did the reboot(thanks I couldn't remember how to do that.) also have tried close the contacts conversation and none of this has worked. I even got onto my iPad and opened the same conversation (I get my iMessages on both iPhone and iPad. It showed the messages but the icon is still showing on my iPhone. I guess my next step is hooking it up to the computer for a back up??
if this preexists then hold down the home button and the power button for about 10 seconds. this is equivalent to taking the battery out of you phone and putting it back in again this should fix
My iPhone 5 is showing I have 5 messages when I don't.
