Unable to use mirror display

After installing updates to my Macbook Pro, mirror displaying is no longer an option. I'm trying to connect it to my tv as I've always had-

Under "dispalys" in system preferences, I checked the box to show use mirror dispalying when available, but the menu icon isn't appearing any more in the menu bar, as it always has.

How do I get these option back?

(OSX 10.9.2)

MacBook Pro, )SX 10.9.2

Well there is too reasons this could happen if this happens again. If you are linking your Mac book pro up to a device that's never been used before then it could be one of two things

  1. The device is not handshaking properly with you mac
  2. you method of mirroring via VGA or HDMI could be outdated for the device even though the plug still fits, like USB 1 fits in a USB2 or USB3 however it is not advised to go reverse compatible even though it could work due to higher transfer rates
