CD burner available for G3 iMac???

Help! I'm trying to upgrade my g3 iMac, and I can't find an external CD burner that's compatible with G3.

Does anyone know of one currently available retail?

If not, do you have one that you're looking to get rid of?

Thanks!

Is your iMac USB only or a later one with Firewire ports?
If an earlier one with USB ports, you should be able to find lots of USB external models that should work. A copy of Toast will probably allow you to use more models.
Back then, most USB1.1 models were 4x max and on a USB iMac, 4x worked for data but for audio you usually had to drop it to 2x or even 1x to get a reliable burn.

I got an external FireWire drive from OWC (Other World Computing) for about $90 bucks. It says Neptune on it and can connect Firewire or USB 2.0. I use it with Toast & have no problem burning or reading disks. I haven't been to the site recently but I bet they still have models available that would work, or check ebay for same. My G3 is still on OS 9, though & I don't know how it would work if you are on another OS.

If you want an external burner, definitely go with FireWire - especially since your iMacs have FireWire ports. You don't want to settle for USB 1.1 (12 Mbps max), when you have the much faster FireWire bus to use (400 Mbps max). A few years ago, I bought a pair of Sony's external (FireWire) CD-RW drives (CRX-160e), for use with my G3s and iMacs. They work well with Toast Titanium 5 (compatible with OS 9.x and up to 10.1.x), and even with the slow (by today's standards) 12-8-32 speeds, they're more than fast enough for the computers' processing speeds. While the mainstream manufacturers have phased out production of external CD-RW drives in favor of external DVD±RW drives, some retailers catering to owners of older computers (like "Other World Computing") still package external CD-RW drives. You can always get an external 5.25" FireWire case and install an ATAPI burner of your choice in it.
