Deleting pictures from iPhone and iPad using the Mac

How do I delete photos from my iPhone and iPad without having to indivudally select them all on the actual device. I have tried using Image Capture, iPhoto and Aperture but none of these allow me to select a number of photos and then hit the delete button. Also neither my iPhone and iPad show up as devices in the finder window. Why is that? If that is the problem, how do I get them to show up? I would like to be able to just simply open these devices and manipulate the items on them directly withouth having to use some other application or program to do so.

For questions on your Phone and iPad you should ask on the relevant forums for these devices. Neither iPhoto nor Aperture are desinged to manage photos on these devices. Why don't they show up in the Finder? Because they just don't work that way. Image Capture does allow you to selet a number of photos and then hit the delete button.
