How get my MBP to recognize Time Machine?

I needed to disconnect Time Machine to reinstall Pages. Now when I reconnect Time Machine, my MBP (Mavericks) will not recognize the TM disc for backup. I deleted it from a choice, thinking I could re-select it and go from there. But now the TM disc is not available to choose.

What can I do go fix this?

MacBook Pro, OS X Mountain Lion (10.8.5)

Reset Time Machine.

See A4 here. http://pondini.org/TM/Troubleshooting.html

You should then be able to select your TC disk and TM will automatically reconnect to its old backups.

Your profile shows Mountain Lion .. is this still the case? Mavericks can have a few more issues.

No luck with the above do a full factory reset of the TC.

Details below.

This will delete nothing on the hard disk but allow you to reconfigure the TC and setup disk access anew.

I really recommend using SMB naming.. it just works better but particularly with Mavericks as it now uses SMB networking by default.

So all names to be short, no spaces and pure alphanumeric. When you run through the setup wizard do not blindly accept the apple recommended names.. over long, spaces and apostrophe. Change it to simple short.

eg TCgenx (base station name, use the actual gen number for x).

TCwifi (wireless name. or use TC24ghz and TC5ghz to name each band).

Then once again reset the TM and point it to your newly renamed TC.

No luck..

Particularly again in Mavericks.. manually mount the disk in finder. Use Go / Connect to server.

Type in

AFP://TCname.local

Where you replace TCname with the new short TC name.

Universal Factory Reset.. any model TC or AE.

Unplug your TC/AE from power or turn off at the power point.

Hold in reset. and power the TC/AE back on.. all without releasing reset and keep holding in for about 10sec. (this is often difficult without a 2nd person or a 3rd arm).

Release it when the status light flashes rapidly. If it doesn’t flash rapidly you have missed it and try again.

Note..

Be Gentle! Feel the switch click on. It has a positive feel.. add no more pressure after that.

TC/AE will reboot after a couple of minutes with default factory settings and will wipe out previous configurations of the router.

No files are deleted on the hard disk in a TC.. No reset of the TC deletes files.. to do that you use erase from the airport utility.
