Why won't my Apple wireless keyboard stay powered on?

I got a message saying "Keyboard battery is low." I changed the batteries (using two standard Duracell AA batteries and positioning them correctly) and pressed the keyboard power button. The light showed green. However, when I tried the keyboard, it didn't work.

I reinserted the batteries and pressed the keyboard power button again. The light showed green again, but went off immediately. I repeated this several times but the problem persists--every time I press the power button, the light shows green, then goes off. Can anyone tell me why the power button won't stay on? Thanks!

Depending on the batteries, some people (a few) have had similar problems. They "fixed" it in a variety of ways.
