1 beep = no RAM installed
2 beeps = incompatible RAM types
3 beeps = no good banks
4 beeps = no good boot images in the boot ROM (and/or bad sys config block)
5 beeps = processor is not usable
Did you recently install RAM? It may not be seating properly. Run the AHT. It's on the DVD that originally came w/your iMac.
Report back the results. -

Mar 5, 2014 12:05 PM in response to Baby Boomer (USofA)by Mackydees,Hi, I haven't touched it since I bought it and I bought it from a chap who built it for me. It has Boot Camp on it and the drive is partioned so I can use Windows XP. Is this likely to be the cause at all?

Mar 5, 2014 12:06 PM in response to Frank Caggianoby Mackydees,Hi, the Sender [pid] is xgridagent [42] if that help and as baby boomer said I'm running 10.6.8.

Mar 5, 2014 12:24 PM in response to Mackydeesby Frank Caggiano,Are you actually running Xgrid?
If not I believe if you go to System Preferences->Sharing there is a checkbox for Xgrid, turn it off. (its been a long while since I ran !0.6 so I might be misremembering this)
Message was edited by: Frank Caggiano - fix typo
BTW are you running Snow Leopard Server?

Is this an actual iMac or a Hackintosh?

Mar 5, 2014 3:36 PM in response to Frank Caggianoby Mackydees,I am not a techie, or even an amateur one unfortunately and I don't know what Xgrid is so I'd imagine I'm not. I've turned it off using the instructions you've given and I'm waiting for five minutes to see if it went. Fingers crossed! The log on the console stopped after saying "Admin.xgridAgentControllerPassword: called without first being authenticated." This is from Sender[PID] System Preferences[5237] but the beep is still there.
What is Snow Leopard server?

Mar 5, 2014 3:37 PM in response to Baby Boomer (USofA)by Mackydees,Baby Boomer, it's not on Start Up but rather all the time it's on so is the One Beep = No Ram Installed valid?

Mar 5, 2014 3:42 PM in response to rkaufmann87by Mackydees,No, it's not a Hackintosh, which I think is the reverse of what I've got in that it's a PC/ Laptop that runs Mac OS X on a partitioned drive (?) correct me if I'm wrong please. What I've got is an iMac 27" 2.8 GHz Intel Core i5, 4 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 but it's been partitioned so I can change the start up disk and flip into Windows.

Mar 5, 2014 5:30 PM in response to Mackydeesby Frank Caggiano,So the messages in the log file stopped but you're still hearing a beep every 5 mins?
Have you tried rebooting the system since you turned off the Xgrid preference? If not I would give that a shot.
Don;t worry about what Xgrid is then if you're not running it. Basically It was software from Apple that allowed you to setup multiple machines in a grid to share computational tasks.

Mar 7, 2014 10:16 AM in response to Mackydeesby Frank Caggiano,Ok so the messages in the logs stopped. Is there anything else being printed at about the same interval as the beeps? Have you looked in all the console logs?
Do you get the beeps if you log in as a different user? You have Xgrid turned off (it still is off right, check the System Preferences to be sure) .
You need to see if you have something running doing this but first you need to see if it still happens when logged in as a different user.
