No matter what application I'm using, every 15 or 20 minutes, poof! Finder is selected and I have to navigate back to the other application. All my work will still be there, and music and movies will keep playing. How can I fix this?

Might it have anything to do with Spaces, or Hot Corners? I know if I inadvertently press the keyboard shortcut to switch the Space I'm on, then the Finder will dispaly in the Applications menu.
Go to your home folder. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist. Move the .plist to your desktop.
Re-launch Finder by logging out/in and test. If it works okay, delete the plist from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plist to where you got it from, overwriting the newer ones.

You are welcome. Are you using Spaces and is Finder in a different Space than your applications?
