Reinstall OSX on New Mac Pro

Hi,

I have a new Mac Pro and I want to rebuild it. I have a bootable USB Key that I made with the 10.9 installer from the App Store. This installer works as a bootable image for the old Mac Pro's and for MacBook pro's, but I can't get a new Mac Pro to boot from it. I think the issue might be that it is a different 10.9 revision that the new Mac Pro requires. Has anyone successfully done this yet on the new Mac Pro?

Thanks

Dave

You don't need 10.9.2 but you do need 10.9.1+ build that was used with the 6,1

T he other thing to consider doing is just make an image of the system for restore or to boot from for emergency or backup bootable system.

T he only reason would be if Migration/Setup Assistant somehow or you need to partition the drive and can't resize alone.

The problem I am having with the recovery is that the Mac Pro now has 10.9.2 on it and it is giving us some issues with some programs we are running. I want to do a fresh install of 10.9.1 but the recovery will only give me a fresh install of 10.9.2. Unless I'm doing something wrong.

You would need to do a full Internet Recovery like so:

Install Mavericks, Lion/Mountain Lion Using Internet Recovery

Be sure you backup your files to an external drive or second internal drive because the following procedure will remove everything from the hard drive.

Boot to the Internet Recovery HD:

Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND-OPTION- R keys until a globe appears on the screen. Wait patiently - 15-20 minutes - until the Recovery main menu appears.

Partition and Format the hard drive:

1. Select Disk Utility from the main menu and click on the Continue button.

2. After DU loads select your newly installed hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.

3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to one. Click on the Options button, set the partition scheme to GUID then click on the OK button. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed. Quit DU and return to the main menu.

Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion. Mavericks: Select Reinstall Lion/Mountain Lion, Mavericks and click on the Install button. Be sure to select the correct drive to use if you have more than one.

Note: You will need an active Internet connection. I suggest using Ethernet

if possible because it is three times faster than wireless.

This should restore the version of OS X originally pre-installed on the computer.

The App Store is going to know based on your Apple ID that you need the OEM Mavericks for your new "Late 2013 Mac Pro 6,1"

You should always use the latest version of OS X. You can get updates from the Mac App Store (in Mountain Lion), Software Update pane of System Preferences, or from Apple Support Downloads. To find build numbers for specific Mac computers, refer to OS X versions (builds) for computers.

The recent firmware update 2.0 can also play a factor.
