Help! Got a kernel panic while my 2014 Mac pro was in sleep mode.

I'm having weird issues with my new mac pro while connected to the pegasus2 r4, via thunderbolt. I suspect the issue is related to conflicting power management settings from my pegasus vs the mac pro. Following the advice from pegasus, I turned off the promise utility power management settings. I noticed the external drives would turn on spin up once every hour for one minute while in sleep mode. I assume this is a typical behavior of the "power nap" setting being on. What do you guys think?

Occasionally, while my external drives would spin up in sleep, I'll have a kernel panic that will reboot my computer. Is this due to power nap or the pegasus drives?

Judging from the panic log it appears the problem is related to USB. If you have any third-party USB peripherals connected, then remove them. If you have installed any third-party software related to USB, then uninstall that software.

I noticed this one third-party extensions, com.promise.driver.stex 5.2.7. Suggest you remove it and the software that installed it.

Mar 5, 2014 1:45 PM in response to Kappy

com.promise.drive.stex is the device driver for my external pegasus r4 external hard disk unit. It's connected to the mac pro via thunderbolt 2. Regarding the drivers for it, would I still be able to use the device if I unsinstalled the drivers? I've set up the pegasus as the primary location for my documents, downloads, pictures, etc., leaving the preinstalled 256gb mac pro hard drive only for programs and the os itself.

Mar 5, 2014 1:52 PM in response to alen655321

I have no idea. I am not at all familiar with Thunderbolt external arrays like that. But I would disconnect it and remove the driver just to be sure it is not causing the panic. You could try booting into Safe Mode to see if the panics cease. Safe mode should disable the driver. Discounnect the drive box, too. It's simply a process of ellimination. It's possible that the USB related drivers identified in the log may also support the Thunderbolt ports.

Mar 5, 2014 2:02 PM in response to Kappy

Thank you for your help/ suggestions. I'll be sure to give that a try. What makes this problem harder to pin point is the fact that I get the kernel panics only occasionally. Once a week or once every few days and only when the computer is asleep or coming out of sleep. But then again, my computer will be alseep for several days startight and doesn't exhibit any problems.

Besides that, the only other usb connections are my apple wired keyboard, my backup power ups, my wacom cintiq drawing tablet, and computer speakers. With the exception of my drawing tablet, none of my other usb devices have have firmware/ software installed.

Thanks again!

Mar 9, 2014 7:28 AM in response to alen655321

I had the exact same problem early this morning. I opened the Promise Utility and from the Promise Utility menu selected "Check for Updates." Sure enough, there is an update to the Thunderbolt driver from 5.2.7 to 5.4. I applied the update and we'll see if that fixes it. It may not, but it's always good to have the latest drivers.

Mar 9, 2014 3:53 PM in response to Colojo

Have you by any chance moved your home folder onto the pegasus? Because I think that might've been the cause for me. I believe what was going on was since my home folder had been moved to the pegasus, that caused the mac pro to force the pegasus to wake up every hour in order to perform the power nap features. And since sometimes the pegasus didn't wake in time, that caused the mac pro to go into a panic state because it couldn't locate the home folder and thus it would reboot and show a kernel panic. In addition to kernel panics, I wasn't able to log into my user account a couple times because the pegasus had ejected itself from the mac pro when the computer had gone to sleep. So I reformated and reinstalled mavericks on my computer and have left the home folder in place, but instead I made shortcuts or symbolic links of my documents, etc and have not had any problems since! Not sure if this is the same case for you. But definitely make sure the promise drivers and firmware are up to date. Keep us posted!

Mar 9, 2014 4:23 PM in response to alen655321

Yes, I have moved my home folder to the Pegasus. I was in the process of doing a full backup with Carbon Copy Cloner to my NAS device when the KP occurred. I wouldn't think the Mac or the Pegasus would go to sleep during a backup; in fact, my Mac is configured to never sleep. Promise has posted a script you can execute in the Terminal to keep the Pegasus from sleeping as well, but I haven't run it yet. Thanks for your post... I'll keep what you did in mind!

I have been experiencing a similar problem - only much more frequently, several reboots per day. Is there any trick to reading a panic report? What good is the report if it doesn't inform of the issue triggering it?

I'm not completely sure but the beginning of mine seems to time out to connecting my iMac to UPS, an older APC750 at first and subsequently a new Cyberpower CP1500AVRLCD. I do have a MacAlly external hard drive connected via USB.

Jul 26, 2014 10:35 AM in response to Forcefour

Is there any trick to reading a panic report?

Why, yes, there is. Included near the end of the article lllaass cited, there is a recommendation that, after you have done some preliminary troubleshooting steps, you post the panic log here.

You use this article to fetch a copy of the complete panic report, and post (the text, not a screenshot) right here in the forums. Then dozens of readers pore over it looking for things that might be causing the trouble.

When they come forward with their opinions, we all try to see how the panic report suggested the proposed issue, and we ALL (you included) get a little bit better at reading them.

Mac OS X: How to log a kernel panic

Jul 26, 2014 11:12 AM in response to alen655321

There are many, many mountable drives which do not wake from sleep properly under Mavericks. Some will jsut dismount improperly and send up a warrning, some will freeze the system / make it look like a larger issue than it is. And 10.9.4 does not fix them all unfortunately (despite Apple's mention of sleep issues that were addressed).

Bottom line this is an Apple OS issue, so it is not specific to any one Mac. The best thing to do until Apple fixes the problems entirely, is to turn off "Put hard disks to sleep when possible" and just sleep your display, not your computer if the problems persist. Even that may not work.

Sep 16, 2014 7:56 AM in response to Forcefour

I have a similar issue after connecting a CyberPower UPS box to my iMac via USB cable - the panic happens while the iMac is asleep.

@alen655321, your panic log shows that you're connected to a CyberPower UPS device:

USB Device: PR1500LCD

This is probably an issue with the CyberPower driver. Until the driver is fixed, best bet is to disconnect the USB cable. Hope this helps...
