I have found the same as others. Pages was my first choice after we upgraded from a very old Mac, but couldn't read Appleworks files. LibreOffice does basic text files easily, not so good if there are graphics included, but quite an acceptable alternative. It is hard to see why Apple had the translators in the earlier Pages, but took them out, as it only makes their own software less useful. Thankfully LibreOffice is around.
LibreOffice does WP, SS, DR, and PT from Claris/AppleWorks, so yes it DOES do graphics, and its own graphics component is much better than CW/AW.
I guess Apple decided that AW has had its day, even for updating via Pages. However, when I first started using Pages 4 a few years ago I was startled to find it WOULDN'T translate AW text documents. Then I upgraded to the latest version of Pages 4 and found that it would after all. I believe Pages 4 may still be available? I not, get a copy of the relevant iWork from eBay (as I did) but make sure you upgrade Pages via Apple/Support/Support Downloads.

Thanks for your thoughts. I had heard that Pages 4 could open AppleWorks, but I didn't think it was available. I guess getting it on eBay is a way.
Do you think Pages is better than LibreOffice to make this worthwhile? I would expect it to be simpler and easier to use, but I have seen some unfavourable reviews. What do you think?

Feb 7, 2016 2:21 AM in response to Unkle eby christopher rigby1,I think it depends on your needs.
If your prime thing is WP and you want to not only easily include graphics, but be able to handle everyone else's Word documents and save as Word too, then I'd say Pages.
However, if your main thing is to be able to convert a huge number of old document formats, then LibreOffice.
LibreOffice is a free download anyway so it wouldn't hurt to have it on hand for whenever you need it, even if you decide to buy Pages 4.

Mar 7, 2016 2:28 PM in response to rlinictby phildo,Am about to try batch converter software called Document Converter from RootRise to retrieve a bunch of Appleworks files .cwk that got left behind when we updated OS X. Anyone got any experiences of it?

Mar 7, 2016 2:37 PM in response to phildoby christopher rigby1,I've not tried that one, but Libre Office will open just about any Claris/AppleWorks file. Also, SheepShaver runs in Mavericks so you can run the original software in - e.g. CW in OS 8.6 - and output it to your Unix HD in a format that can be opened

This is an old thread.
You might get more replies if you posted a new question about Document Converter.
I note from their website it does claim to open Appleworks spreadsheets and batabase documents! (sic ).
Again, the free LibreOffice now opens these as well.

Mar 14, 2016 11:51 PM in response to rlinictby Lowbflat,Pages 4.3 still works in El Capitán OS 10.11.2. If you leave it in the iWork '09 folder in Applications, it will behave.
You can do a Get Info on a .cwx document and select Pages 4.3 as the default so that all will open You can then save as .pages or in Word.
If you have access to an old installer disk for iWork '09, it installs without a problem. Then download the 9.3 updater from this link and install it.
Again, keep the iWork '09 folder intact and in Applications.
For many of us, Pages 4.3 is far superior to 5.x (currently 5.6.1)—it's a shame that Apple dumbed it down to be compatible to iOS. The only down side is that Pages 4.3 (iWork 9.3) doesn't work with the version of Pages in iOS 9. Oh well... there's always Word, I suppose...

Mar 15, 2016 4:28 AM in response to Lowbflatby christopher rigby1,I guess it's because Apple sells millions more iOS devices than Macs, so we shouldn't be too surprised. You would have thought though, given their massive cash reserves, that they could have come up with iOS software that 'plays' perfectly with the full OS X version, even if it is only a cut-down version of the same thing. And they are quite possibly the leading manufacturers of laptops, which all run the full OS X.

Mar 15, 2016 12:11 PM in response to Lowbflatby Peggy,The file extension for all ClarisWorks & AppleWorks files is .cwk. Stationery files have the .cws extension. This goes all the way back to ClarisWorks 1 for Windows. There is no such thing as .cwx for ClarisWorks or AppleWorks.
