Why Scanner logo no longer appears when I open my printer?

I am running Mavericks on my iMac desk top running Intel. I have an HP Photosmart All in one printer. I used to be able to insert the page I want to scan on the glass bed of my printer and then open the printer icon and I would see a scanner on the right side where I would just click on it and the scanner screen would come on, and I could determine the margines etc. and then just click "Scan". I no longer see the iCon of the scanner. Can anyone tell me how to scan now that I have Mavericks???
