anytime I connect camera it imports events already ion the library

Anytime I connect my camcorder to iMovie, it wants to import all the clips on the camera, even the ones that are laready imported into the iMovie library. I have checked the settings for it to check for duplicates but still continues to try to import all clips that are there. I a not sure when this started, but in the past, when I left the iMovie import screen on "automatic" import, it would only select the clips not yet imported to iMovie. Any ideas would be much appreciated.
