Can't Access Time Capsule From Finder

When I open a Finder window I see my TC listed under Shared but when I click on it it disappears. Then seconds later it reappears. The only way I'm able to connect is by going to Go > Connect To Server > and entering smb://TCNAME or afp://TCNAME.local But even when I connect with either method I see the drive on my desktop, I can access the "Data" drive in Finder. But when I go into Finder under Shared I click my TC and is says "Connection Failed" and gives me the option to "Connect As" but when I click it nothing happens. I've used similar setups before you click the TC name and it works no problem, what am I doing wrong?

My setup I'm running is TC in bridged mode with file sharing turned on, I've got the new 3TB model, I'm accessing it from my MBP running latest version of Mavericks.

I know this thread is old, but I am having the same issue, except I have two late 2016 macbooks. I have a 3TB time capsule, that worked wonderfully and have a bunch of files I suddenly couldn't access after a Time Capsule update to 7.7.8. so rather than start a new thread, i thought i'd start by posting under a thread already posted with similar problems with earlier versions. so 10.12 beta is on both machines, so I can't get help with apple support.

however, i updated only the time capsule, but still turned away like a stray. But on one MacBook, which has the exact same beta, i can easily log in, and see my files on the capsule. the other however, has an unresponsive connect as button, and does not connect, and does not offer any connection related choices.

so on one machine i'm not able to access those files, and on the other i can both with beta LOL.

i have restarted the units. and the airport, used to show the version bar, and the ability to revert to a previous update. however, i no longer see it as an option in the time capsule.

The easiest way to start over is simply factory reset the TC and redo the setup from the computer having issues.

No files are lost doing this.

Here is the summary I have doubtless posted 100x before.

Factory reset universal

Power off the TC.. ie pull the power cord or power off at the wall.. wait 10sec.. hold in the reset button.. be gentle.. power on again still holding in reset.. and keep holding it in for another 10sec. You may need some help as it is hard to both hold in reset and apply power. It will show success by rapidly blinking the front led. Release the reset.. and wait a couple of min for the TC to reset and come back with factory settings. If the front LED doesn’t blink rapidly you missed it and simply try again. The reset is fairly fragile in these.. press it so you feel it just click and no more.. I have seen people bend the lever or even break it. I use a toothpick as tool.

N.B. None of your files on the hard disk of the TC are deleted.. this simply clears out the router settings of the TC.

Setup the TC again.

Then redo the setup from the computer you want to use for TM using Airport Utility.

1. Use very short names.. NOT APPLE RECOMMENDED names. No spaces and pure alphanumerics.

eg TCgen5 for basestation and TCwifi wireless name.

If the wireless is still a problem set wireless names like TC24ghz and set the 5ghz to different name.. eg.TC5ghz

2. Use all passwords that also comply with 1. but can be a bit longer. ie 8-20 characters mixed case and numbers.. no non-alphanumerics.

**3. If the TC is main router you can skip this point. This is only an issue when the TC is bridged.

Ensure the TC always takes the same IP address.. you will need to do this on the main router using dhcp reservation.. or a bit more complex setup using static IP in the TC.

Ignore this point if you don't understand it .. post back if you have drop out issues.

4. Make sure IPv6 is set correctly in the computer. ie link-local only for ethernet and/or wireless depending on which you use. Auto is not good enough.

Why don't you upgrade now to the 10.12.3 since full version has been out quite a while. Continuing to use a beta is not really a good idea.

BTW there are issues with Sierra so what you are experiencing is still there in the latest patch. Unfortunately that is not a fix but still from a security point of view is important.

TCNAME being actual name?

Are you directly connected to the TC by ethernet or wireless?

If not please do so.

Make sure ipv6 is set to link-local. On both wireless and ethernet on the computer (if it has ethernet) as well as the TC.

No luck I recommend you factory reset the TC and start over.

Do not use caps in the name.. Use all lower case.

Make sure the computer share name also complies.

There is a chance it is faulty.. if you cannot get it working and have Apple store nearby take it all in and get them to fix it.

I read all the posts in this section.. everyone.. and have now been doing it for a couple of years. I am not interested in being an expert at everything.. just the TC. So I accumulate a lot of mixed experienced. Not all are relevant to every problem.. but occasionally you think .. that makes no sense but I will store that away for the rainy day when all the more obvious things don't work. Having Caps in a name prevented people from accessing the TC.. I do not remember all the details.. just when I said try a name.. all lower case it worked..

It might be totally unrelated.. or it might be significant.. I have tested it lately and found that if I rename my TC, TCGen4 or tcgen4 it does in fact cause issues, and that I had to reset Time Machine.. so the CAPS mattered.

One of the tools I am using more is network utility and the netstat scan.

I am noticing issues with the domain and names.

This is on Mountain Lion.. I have only loaded Mavericks on one computer that I use.. and I think it is not ready for beta testing yet!!!

I think I will go back to Mountain Lion on it for now.

I also have a problem with the Airport Time Capsule disk name (the name I chose is just a few lowercase letters) disappearing in Finder under "Shared". Although lately, the Airport Time Capsule disk still appears in the Airport Utility under "Disks" and in "Time Machine Preferences". As LaPastenague suggests, I just changed ipv6 to link-local on both the computer and Time Capsule and I will see if it helps me. For now I am leaving the Base Station name as is.

I have a Westell Wirespeed Dual Connect NAT Router Model 6100F and Airport Time Capsule ME177LL/A Model No. A1470 802.11ac 2TB version 7.72 (77200.7)

Hello,

I'd just like to let you know that I've been also facing several issues with my 3T Time Capsule: instability when clicking on the icon via Finder, or accessing it via the Airport Utility, very slow response when browsing its internal hard disk.

Anyways, by following your recommendations, it seems that the issues were now gone. I suspect the biggest culprit was the names, since I was using uppercases everywhere (ICCNet, ICCDisk, ICCBase, etc), and the last thing I would think of would be that. Now I changed everything to lowercase, made that little adjustment to IPv6, and now everything seems to be smooth, and fast.

It is important to notice that when we change TC names, all the network will be down, you will need to re-login on the 'lowercase' network, and all the dhcp address will be renewed and probably changed. Also all the Time Machines from the Macs must be reconfigured, since I discovered that "ICCDisk" is different from "iccdisk" by TM perspective.

So plan ahead, it's not just renaming. Some work will be required.

However, once it's everything done, your network will fly. And finally you will se why people say TC is one of the best products on its league.

So, LAPASTENAGUE, thank you very much for spending the time collecting all these information. I couldn't do it without your help.

Note that reconfiguring IPv6 to link-local causes the Time Capsule to reboot, so it may not be a direct solution. Does changing the name require a reboot also?

Mine has been doing this sporadically, I've occasionally power cycled to restore it to operation, which is annoying.

I'll report back if it hangs up again with IPv6 at link-local. Might be 6 months to a year though.

Hi,

I had problem with my TC.

After a given time (a few days..), the disks (internal and the one I added with USB) were not functionnaly OK.

I had a folder icon, but not the content and the finder said me it doesn't know about an application to open it (!!!)

I made the change about IPV6 ont my macbook pro only (it was already local on the TC)

Names of the internal disk is "Data" by default, and the external is "LaCie", I didn't change them.

I will report in 2 month, if I get the problem again.

One day later....

Changing the IPV6 parameter on my MBP doesn't change anything except that I don't need to reboot the TC nor the external drive. A simple disconnect and reconnect, and the disk is again on line.

I will see to change the name to lower case.
