Mar 6, 2014 12:13 PM in response to Shane 24by K Shaffer,If you want the password login screen to appear when the computer first starts, so it won't go further, choose the settings in System Preferences> Accounts> then click Lock to make changes at bottom, for your Admin or active user, enter password, and at the bottom of the area where User names is a Login Options box, click on it.
You can choose to disable 'Automatic Login' from an Admin account, or choose any other User as the default automatically logged-in account. So a limited user account with parental controls set to restrict it, can also be a default automatic login; or non at all. See the option for 'list of users' or 'name & password' too.
Be sure click 'Lock' again to lock Account changes at bottom before exiting System Preferences.
When none are chosen and this is disabled, there is a login window where all users would have to supply their account password; or an Admin account password entered, to access the desktop and use the computer. But on restart, the computer only goes as far as this main login screen.
{Avoid setting an open firmware password, since the machine would be nearly useless if the password is forgotten. Also avoid encryption of the data on the hard disk drive. These can almost permanently affect use in several ways if they fail. Or data may be lost.}
Use a backup hard disk drive for copies; you could see if TimeMachine software could save some stuff to an external drive. A separate external hard disk drive with suitable oxford-type chipset and a separate power supply is recommended for use with bootable System Clones.
Good luck & happy computing!
