I can't update my iphone because the phone says there is no storage available. Yet there isn't much on the phone. No music, not many apps, etc. Itunes says there is 5 GB free. Why is this?

What is the EXACT message you're getting?
phone: Storage Almost Full: You can manage your storage in Settings.
iTunes: Updating to iOS 7.0.6 requires 610MB of free space on your iPHone. Please change your media sync options to make more storage.
everytime I sync the phone the amount of free space changes but I haven't changed anything. It went from 5.25GB to 3.67 to full then to 3.39GB.
Then turn off music sync. Let it remove the music from the phone, and update it using iTunes. Then you can sync your music back to the phone from iTunes.
"The iPhone cannot be synced because not enough free space is available"
Storage is full yet there is hardly anything on phone.
