In FCE 4.2 since a short time I find the commands Canvas and Timeline (to show this utilities) outgrayed; deleting the preferences did not help.

You need to have a sequence open for them to be functional. Either open an existing sequence or create a new one.
Open a new sequence: File > New > Sequence.

Difference between FCE and Final Cut Pro X - completely different in almost ever respect. Completely new editing paradigm. No cross transfer between applications.
There is a 30 day free trial for FCP-X if your computer will support it.
