I too had the same problem. Straight Talk customer care can fix this. They will make you do amateur workarounds and even try to blame Apple. Don't buy it. I resetted my Iphone 5 (CDMA A1429 Straight talk Verizon) and lost access to 3G. Straight Talk people fixed it after 2 and a half hours on phone call meddling with basic settings and phone resets. Then the customer representative called another team and got it sorted out. The problem is that these CDMA version Iphones don't allow us to manually configure APN settings. Else, I would have fixed it myself. GSM versions have lots of workarounds available in the web.

Your iPhone was not unlocked - it was hacked by unlockitit.co.nz

Terms of Use for this forum prohibit discussion of hacked iPhones.

Suggest you contact unlockitit for assistance.

Only the wireless provider to which an iPhone is locked can unlock it.

In your case, you need to work with Sprint to see if they offer unlocking

and if you qualify. Be advised, the hack that unlockitit did may prevent

a legitimate unlock from completing.

Some of this talk is beyond my knowledge base, but I do have a pretty good basic understanding of how to troubleshoot. My problem is I have exactly the same error message "Could not activate cellular data network".

I have done all the troubleshooting I could think of (Airplane mode, toggle cellular settings, Reset Cellular Data Settings), and finally contacted my service provider, T-Mobile. The tech had me verify my APN settings, which were as they should be. He said they can see my phone is on "a" network, but they can't see what network (because I am in Canada with the phone, and it is using an affiliate network, just like it has been for the past 6 months... I winter in AZ and summer in Canada).

The phone worked flawlessly for the past 6 months, roaming in Canada on my Arizona T-Mobile account until yesterday, when suddenly I could no longer get any internet services. The indicator in the menu bar has 5 bars of my nearest cellular provider (SaskTel's) 3G service, that is why T-Mobile help desk could see it was "on line" but had no explanation as to why I could not connect.

He tried a couple of things, which did nothing, then suggested I backup and do an erase and restore of my iPhone, which I did.

It still acts the very same way as before. This threadCould not activate cellular data network, suggests that maybe something in the backup is corrupt, so I erased it all again, and this time set it up as a new phone, not from the backup.

That did not help either - I am still getting 5 bars of SaskTel 3G in the indicator in the menu bar, but the internet apps say I have no connection to the internet. Just like before.

Any other thoughts or suggestions? I am not due back into AZ for another month and he suggested if the erase and restore did not fix it, it might be hardware related, but I don't want to be an entire month without internet on my phone... (we do not have T-Mobile in Canada).

Much obliged.

SaskTel is a partner with T-Mobile and I have been getting internet data coverage with SaskTel 3G for the past 6 months through SaskTel. My "Current Roaming Period" with SaskTel is 3.4 GB, so no problem there (until yesterday). I have not taken it to a SaskTel store... that is a thought.

The T-Mobile tech support said they did see a data connection after he had me reboot the phone, but it just said "other" because it is a Canadain affiliate partner but does not specify which one. That would make sense as to why my menu bar indicates 5 bars of SaskTel 3G, but it is a mystery as to why I can't connect to the internet.

I will try a SaskTel store - thank you for that suggestion. I called T-Mobile first of course, because it is a T-Mobile phone, with T-Mobile as my service provider, but SaskTel may be able to shed some light. Appreciate the idea. I'll post pack if I find a solution.

Well I was not near a SaskTel store so I continued searching the forums and found one that listed some things in a specific order, to try. One thing that I had missed was doing the update to iOS 8. (I kept getting not enough storage space issues, so ignored the update messages.). So I figured out why I did not have enough storage space, updated to the latest iOS and that solved my problem of not connecting to the internet.

What worked for my iphone 5s :

Connect your APPLE device to a wifi connection.

  • Access Safari and navigate to www.unlockit.co.nz
  • Click Create APN at the bottom of the page.
  • Select the Country as United States.
  • Select YOUR Carrier .
  • Click Create APN in the grey oval, at the bottom
  • Click Install located in the upper right corner.
  • The device will explicitly say when the installation process has completed (5 to 30 seconds).
  • Once the APN has been instilled restart your phone, enable your cellular data (Go to Settings --> Cellular), then enjoy your data.

You might have to do this first (I didn't): delete/uninstall the old APN setting. Settings > General > Scroll to bottom and the "Profile" should state "APN Carrier Settings" delete."
