Ever since my last update, i hve been unable to use my external HD or plug my iPhone into the USB ports. My mac simply does not recognize there is something plugged in. Why is this?

You need to reset your SMC. For non portable macs it involves shutting down, unplugging, waiting 30s, plugging back up, waiting 5s, then booting. For portable Macs it usually requires holding the shift-control-option-power keys to restart the Mac. You can say which Mac you have for more specific instructions.
