Button Image In DVD Studio Pro 4

I am using DVD Studio Pro 4 to burn a project about Hawaii created in FCP. I would like to use an image of a pineapple for the button shape or style. I would like the image to appear when the button is highlighted and disappear when not highlighted. I have four buttons on the main menu but can't get the pineapple images to disappear and re-appear when called on through "highlighting" them. I have not been able to figure out the proper procedure to get this done. I can get the images to appear in the buttons but cannot get them to disappear when NOT highlighted. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

If all you need is some "disappearing" pineapple shapes, this can be easily done using an overlay.

Read up on overlays in your DVD Studio Pro Help files if you haven't used one before.

In its simplest form an overlay is just a white background (probably the shape of your menu) with black "graphic areas" wherever you want your buttons to be.

After you set your overlay on the menu (it's like setting a background) you'll need to

1. Set the button state to selected

2. Drag the cursor across the button area until all your graphic is revealed

3. Option+Drag the button to create and place the rest of the buttons.

You set the selected and active states in the button inspector like this:

User uploaded file

the zero opacity in the normal state is what makes the graphic "disappear." You can set any color you like and can use grayscale in the graphic to get up to 4 colors per button if you like.

Hope this helps... if not, post back a clarification of your needs.

I have been able to get the pineapple "shapes" to work but was hoping to get the actual pineapple image to appear and disappear in the menu by using the regular menu in FCP. It looks like I will have to go the "layered menu" route if I want that to happen but that has too many other limitations--no motion backgrounds or sound--for me to go there. Thank you for a great explanation!

Generally layered menus can cause issues on players and some other things you mentioned.

You can cheat a bit by putting the Pineapple in the background and then the buttons state set to the background color so it is covered.

In other words, lets say your background is solid black with 5 Pineapples. The overlay would have a sqaure over each of the pineapples and you set it to pure black when the button is not selected. Pineapples hidden. Some colors work better and it may take work to find a good match and may not be perfect....

I did a variation of the concept for "rollovers" here
