My images are copying Extremely slowly onto my outer hard drive

I also cannot download my images from my iphone for some reason- (curing a niormal backup). In both cases the computer is teing me there is a problem with one or more of thefiles. The problem with this is- it is saying this about so many of the foders and also the pics from myphone..What can I do?
