When I plug in either my iPad or iphone the summary page no longer comes up, all that comes up is a completely new window titled Apple Ipad, but I can't see where the summary is or how to transfer things to my iPad. I am updated on the latest upgrades with iPad iphone and iTunes

Turn on the Sidebar in iTunes via View > Show Sidebar.
You may or may not be aware iTunes is a little different now, when you attach your iPad to your computer the icon for it should appear somewhere in the top right of the iTunes window. However if you do what Jim suggests above, then this will look more like the iTunes scenario you're most familiar with.
