Why does my phone go in to no service and stay like it untill I reboot the phone?

The other night I noticed that my phone was showing no service, i.e, no signal being recieved from my carrier, and it stayed like this for two hours until I rebooted the phone, I had also moved about 30 miles in this time as well. As soon as I restarted the phone I had a signal and was able to send and recieve calls etc again.
