imac mailboxes disappeared

Got a new imac with Maverick software. I use gmail and created mailboxes on this imac. They have suddenly disappeared, but I know they are there because if I try to create a new one with a name I've used, it says that I can't becausse the mailbox is already there. How do I make the mailboxes visible?
