Q: iPhone 5 screen bulge

My iphone 5 has recently developed a bulge on the left hand side of the screen just above the volume buttons. I have taken it into the apple store who said they believe it to be the battery expanding but as the phone is one month outside of warranty they will not replace. Then told me to contact my service provider, which I have done and they have sent me back to apple. Any suggestions? I don't think its fair that I should have to pay to repair a faulty item as I would expect an item of this cost to last much longer than 13 months. Anyone know if I'm covered under the sales of goods act?

The screen bulge is causing some other problems as well:

Phone turns off randomly

Touch screen is very temperamental

Freezing

Any input would be highly appreciated.

iPhone 5, iOS 7.0.6

    Hi

I am facing the same problem but the bad part is when i checked few months back my phone was under the replacement program but because i didn't faced the issue i didn't thought it to be necessary and here i am now facing it after 5-6 months but worst part now its past 3 years and iPhone won't cover for it.... I am not sure what should i do now... I checked another fault for which iPhone5 sleep/wake button and again my phone is among the few which they are fixing but i am not facing this issue now ... I am in a dilemma .... or should i just give up on the phone.. ;(

If Apple is offering a program to deal with a specific issue with your device, you should always take advantage of it. I suspect, however, that they won't do anything about the Power button until you pay to get the battery replaced.

I Went to the apple service centre ... I was prepared a little that I might have to pay .. But was not expecting 1/4 of the phone ... And to top it when I talked about the replacement scheme they said they dont offer it ... Apple is offering it and they are just the service centre ... to make his point he said like in USA if you go to any Apple Store with your phone you get an upgrade option which is not available to Indian customer similarly like this .. Replacement program is not available to Indian customer .... I was so ****** off ... Does the person even know what he is talking ... You are Apple's authorised service provider and you are saying that even if Apple is agreeing you won't do it ... Just coz we are in India .. It's not like coz we are here we are paying any less For the phone then what people pay in USA ... i just don't know what to say anymore .... Apples service has gone downhill ... I have an iPhone 4 also which is working fine ... But my bad luck iPhone 5 ruined my perception about apple service and treating each and every customer as premium

In Australia if your battery is swollen they replace your iPhone for $120 AUD.

In general, Apple will replace a phone with a swollen battery for the price of a battery replacement, which is U$79, assuming there is nothing else wrong with the phone.

I think you will find that all prices are higher in India; that's why a lot of people buy phones in other countries to use in India. Most likely it is added taxes, but I don't know the Indian tax structure so I can't say for sure.

I have an iphone 5 with the same battery bulging issue. It is pushing my screen/LCD out, slightly bending it, though.

My iPhone is 3 1/2 years old.  Does that mean Apple will not fix it for free?

It is out of warranty, so Apple will not fix it for free. They will usually fix it for $79, the cost of a replacement battery.

Yeah, but I heard in other forums that this is an extreme issue and many people have gotten it replaced way out of warranty for free

No, it's not an "extreme issue". However, only Apple can tell you want Apple will do for you. Contact them and ask.

    Hi

Even I had this issue recently and my phone was also more then 3.5 years ... but they refused to do it for free but replaced my phone for the cost of the battery...

So don't get too high hopes the replacement is free of charge only if your phone is not old then 3 years..
