Yes its free of cost replacement for defective batteries of apple.
Pay attention now...
You replied to a 16 month old post.
Batteries are covered ONLY if they are under warranty.
At the time (March 2014), the warranty had already expired.
and the iPhone 5 battery replacement program did not start until August 2014 (2 months after I posted)

Oct 22, 2015 6:21 AM in response to Zeit13by tiger_m3,I guess you better check other branch,
I forgot to update my last post when my iphone bulges.
My iphone5 was purchase during the december 2012 timeframe, so when the bulge happened, i had to google much and came to this forum posts.
I had went to the Apple official site to check my serial if my iphone 5 eligible for the battery replacement program. To my shock, the serial number is eligible for the power button replacement but not the battery replacement program. So I had to go to the apple authorized dealer and consult the apple Tech, without any question, the tech checked the serial number, and it doesnt fall under the program, but he said this, "the serial is not eligible for the program but we will send this to the tech and check". 5 days later, the tech called me and told me they had replaced the iphone.
So i guess you better check with other branches, in other places and try your luck,
No matter what you are having time bomb which going to explode anytime though.

Oct 23, 2015 9:41 PM in response to Zeit13by sandeep78,Is it really a battery budge or some other default ? As per my knowledge the battery replacement programme is extended till Jan 2016. You better check again with another authorised apple store in your country.
You must get battery replaced or New Piece as per Apple recall programme if it is really a battery bulging problem..

Nov 14, 2015 1:30 PM in response to Samd123by bigeyesssssss,So, I had this same problem, went in to the Genius Bar last night in San Francisco, and the guy there pointed out the same exact thing as everyone else here (very little battery capacity, battery bulge in the same place, etc.). He mentioned that these were lithium batteries and that moisture from the sea air here in SF might have caused the issue. I've never dropped my phone, take good care of it, in a case, sits on my desk most of the time. I also had a MacBookPro 17' some time ago and had to have THAT battery replace ... FOUR times due to the same thing. Told the guy this he said, "well, you must just have incredibly bad luck with batteries." Bought my 5c from my cell carrier and it *just* went out of warranty last month. hmmmmm (my daughter's 5s, same exact thing happened a few months ago. We got our phones at around the same time.) Worst part of all this is ... there are several people claiming on this thread that batteries should be replaced free of charge on all Apple devices. Well, this guy charged me $80 for a new (he said it was new and not a refurb when I asked) 5c. Said that's what they do when you have a battery issue. ??? So my question to the Apple people reading this, is ... is it true that my phone should have been replaced for free, or is this incorrect information on the part of the people posting here?? I'm calling Apple Corp. today to get the facts. As a very long time Apple user, I'm 1) ****** off that I've had battery problems with several devices over the last 5-6 years or so (and know about the "accidents" that have happened to others with swollen batteries in their devices! Apple, get your act together and come up with a NEW BATTERY option!!!), and 2) mighty ****** off if I wasn't supposed to be charged for replacement of a defective device, if that's indeed the case.

Nov 14, 2015 5:39 PM in response to bigeyesssssssby bigeyesssssss,Update: I called the store this afternoon, and was just reimbursed for the blown battery in my phone. Apple did the right thing ultimately, and I received my replacement phone free of charge. Apple, PLEASE do something about the battery technology you're using! I've had way too many blow battery issues across products (not just with one device) and I know I'm not the only one out there experiencing this. This is a safety issue you must resolve. Safety should be priority No. 1 over any newfangled innovation in looks or functionality!

Nov 15, 2015 4:32 PM in response to Chris CAby jibunmirai,My phone was 2 1/5 years old and out of warranty but Apple replaced it on the spot.

Nov 18, 2015 8:33 PM in response to jibunmiraiby abhijit18,I purchased an iPhone 5s 1.5 years ago and 2 weeks ago, it started showing the same problem (screen bulging out near the volume buttons). I went to the Apple authorized service center in Pune, India, but they told me that although it's a common problem, they cannot do anything because it was an "out of country" purchase! This was a total surprise for me as I thought Apple has "worldwide warranty and service". They asked me to go to an Apple store in US.
Now I am trying to send it to US with a friend who will take it to the Apple store there on my behalf. I hope Apple does something with it. I don't expect such an expensive phone to develop such a problem in 1.5 years!

Nov 19, 2015 3:22 AM in response to I_am_Diwakarby abhijit18,Thank you for your reply. Yes, I have called them. They ran some diagnostics on my iPhone (via a link they sent me over email), but that did not show anything wrong and they advised me the same thing as the people in the Apple authorized service center.

Nov 29, 2015 1:06 PM in response to sandeep78by Hwedhlor,We have four iPhone 5 units that were purchased in Sep 2012. Of the four, three of them have developed the swelling battery issue. The first was in Mar 2014, and Apple required full payment for a replacement phone. That replacement developed a swollen battery in Sep of 2015 and the phone was replaced at no charge. One of the others developed a swelling battery and was taken to an Apple store today, and they charged $80 for a replacement phone, saying they were replacing the phone for the cost of the battery. We have one more iPhone 5 that is beginning to show a swelling that displaces the screen on the left side. Will ask Apple what their policy is on swollen batteries before returning it to an Apple store.

Dec 1, 2015 6:20 PM in response to Samd123by e2dad,I just came back from store because of the same issue, charged $79 for battery replacement and got brand new phone.
My iPhone 5 was NOT in the battery replacement program, and was purchased May 2013 and out of warranty. Just informing people of the costs.
