SQL server for mac

Hi, I recently bought an iMac and want to install a trial version of SQL server 2012. I downloaded it- there was a download for mac so I assumed it would work- but I don't know how to install it. Can I do this, and if so, how?

I don't know what you saw, but Microsoft SQL Server only runs on Windows systems. There is no Mac version. The only way to run SQL Server on a Mac would be to run Windows, either via Boot Camp or one of the virtualization solutions. If you want a native SQL server, there are open-source options such as MySQL or commercial releases such as Oracle (though only older versions of Oracle).

Regards.
