Q: external hdd for Time Machine not recognized on startup after 10.9.2 update

I updated my OS to 10.9.2 a few days ago and now every time I start up my iMac 20" (mid 2007) I get an error message saying a disk was not recognized. When I eject the drive and restart the message does not appear. I repaired disk permissions without any problems and Time Machine continues to work on the drive, but the message continues. The drive could be failing I suppose, but it seems odd that the error message happened on the very first restart after the update. Before I buy another drive I'd be grateful for any input I can get.

I was able to isolate the problem to a faulty Firewire 800 cable. No clue what made it go bad as it works for several years without any trouble, but that's what was causing the problem.
