So I my iPhone started to turn itself off last night and display some error code 'nang' something. It would not turn off so I have let it charge all night and then this morning it was all red. I have read on other forum and they call this the red screen of death and it is apparently the hardware that is dead.
Can it be replaced?

Yes it can be replaced.
If the iPhone remains under warranty and Apple determines this is a hardware failiure not caused by accidental damage or abuse, the iPhone will be exchanged under warranty.

It's not under warranty, can I just have the piece changed or I need to change the phone?
That sounds lilke a major problem.
The iPhone would be exchanged. Apple offers an out of warranty or not covered under the warranty "repair" price that pays for an exchange at a significantly reduce price off the full retail sales price. The exchange will be the same model, storage capacity, and color.

Hey if you guys haven't figured it out yet the problem could with the proximity sensor/front camera module. I own a iPhone repair shop and just came across this today. These have caused me problems before. I just switched it out and boom! Worked right away like normal. You probably have a local repair shop in your area who can easily fix this in 20 minutes. I would only get it repair if you are out of warranty or too far away from an Apple Retail Store.
