No audio coming from my mac mini?

I have connected my Mac Mini to my TV via HDMI cable and the audio will not play through the TV. I've gone to system preferences and selected the TV's speakers but still no sound. Is my HDMI cable not able to support audio? I purchased it through Apple thinking it would be the right HDMI cable for the connection to the TV.
