Downloaded English_windows_8_1_professional_upgrade_w64 but bootcamp utility fails to read it

Hello,

I downloaded English_windows_8_1_professional_upgrade_w64 in order to install windows 8.1 on my mac, but the bootcamp utility can't read it. I get error messages like:

"Boot Camp only supports Windows 7 or later installation on this platform. Please use an ISO file for Windows 7 or later installation."

and at other times,

"Boot Camp only supports 64-bit Windows installation on this platform. Please use a ISO file for 64-bit Windows installation."

Any help? Thank you!

You have an upgrade version. To install an upgrade version you must first be running a qualified full version. To do a clean install of Windows 8.1 you need the full version.

It reads like you downloaded an 'exe' file ... how big is your file and what type is it?

It's a .img file. So would I have to purchase a ful version first in order to use this upgrade file?

Yes you need the full version to install Windows. Read the Boot Camp instructions. After installing the full version there would be no need to install the upgrade, unless the full version was an earlier version of Windows.

but as stated you need windows to upgrade windows
