Q: Time machine problem

I backed up my Mac book pro hard drive two weeks ago using time machine. I did a second back up today, and now there is more data on the back up drive on the Macbook pro hard drive. What am I missing? Thanks.

MacBook Pro, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

    1. Is backing up projects and libraries, as  "vault" on a detachable (portable) drive the best of long time picture archival using Aperture or is there another mecahnism I am overlooking? Do "vaults" back up masters also?

    2. Once data on the mac book pro hard drive is deleted, I suppose one can retrieve the masters and the projects and libraires from the backed up vault?

    3. Is it possible to retrieve part of a vault and not a full vault?

    4. What is the best way to make a second copy of the detachable (portable drive).

    5. I do not think Time machine is the best solution for this (a simple drag and drop would work). Thanks kindly.

Time Machine is a backup tool, not an archiving tool. It gives you a window of time in which to recover data that has been lost from the backup sources. You can't rely on it to keep files that you want to keep indefinitely. Any such files must be backed up along with the rest of your original data. Files that you delete from the source volume(s) will eventually be deleted from the backups, after a variable delay that depends on your usage pattern and the size of the backup volume.

The answers to your other questions depend on how you use Aperture. Those questions would be better asked in the Aperture forum on this site.

Unless your needs are very specialized, all you need to do is put the files in a folder somewhere on your backed-up volumes.

Allright, drag and drop is it then. Thanks. I have specialised needs for the work I do on Aperture and I shall direct my questions to the Aperture experts. Thanks again.
