I don't know what happened, but the icons on the main Apple TV screen are suddenly too large. And when I go to Netflix, the search screen is so large that I can't access all the letters. Can anyone suggest a way to resolve this issue? Many thanks!

That would be due to a setting on your HDTV. Cycle through your display settings, refer to your manual if unsure how to do so.
Each input has it's own display settings. The Apple TV does not have any way of zooming in on it's own. The ATV only settings that could remotely have any bearing would be the resolution, under Audio/Video.

Tried this, vazandrew, with no success. I can adjust the picture size easily with regular TV, but as soon as I switch to Apple TV, I can't reduce the size of the icons. Very frustrating because some are cut off and I can't access certain letters on the Netflix search screen.

I see what you mean, vasandrew. I'm in Toronto using Rogers cable. I've checked the settings on my tv (samsung) and can't find anything that works under appearance. I'm not a techie so am limited on what to try. Something must have changed because this just happened. Thanks for trying. I'm just not sure what to do.
