As soon as I pick up my phone and read that I missed a call and slide the message to open the phone the redial starts. Sometime I just don't want to call that person back at that moment or it is a call I just don't want to make. How do you stop this automatic redial? It is very frustrating have to call people you did not want to call in the first place.

I have exactly this issue.
I use my iPhone over Bluetooth in the car.
If the call drops as soon as you press the iPhone 5s's touch ID to unlock the phone it tries to recall the dropped connection.
If you have several dropped calls to different people it could call any of them.
It's as annoying as ****.
Did you ever solve this - now it's 2017, has anything changed. When I get a notification of a call on my screen and I slide it to go to the phone, to try and see if there is any more info about who it may be, calling me, it auto dials that call and I really (at this time anyway) don't want to call anyone. Often times is a scam call anyway
I don't believe there is any setting for this. If the caller does not leave a voicemail, selecting the missed call notifcation will return the call so don't select it. This is designed to be able return a missed call that doesn't leave a voicemail without having to unlock the iPhone.
Use the slide to unlock instead.
This has been driving me crazy too. If it is a feature why can Apple not make it a user selectable feature ie let me choose to turn it on of off as a feature in the settings.

Be real and stop your nonsense. Do really think I am going to restart my iPhone every time I miss a call. Take a shower and spend more time in the bathroom not on this website. Guys like you only screw up a very good website where people who need answers can get them. When you unlock your iPhone after the screen has been off, how do you do it?
The main thing is do not select the missed call notification.
User the main "Slide to unlock" at the bottom of the lock screen instead of sliding the missed call message, wise one.

MOd never told you to restart the iPhone each and every time. He recommended a primary troubleshooting step, probably because he thought you were using the device properly. Which you weren't.

It already is "user selectable" - use "slide to unlock" to unlock without dialing and slide missed number to redial. Not bothering to read the User Guide and learn how to use the phone is what's "driving you crazy."
Since there is already a feature option on the screen to avoid using the alert less that two inches away, and the alert itself is clearly labeled "Slide to Call", that would pretty much be a waste of resources, now wouldn't it.
Maybe I did not make myself clear. My issue is the auto redail on call failure. It does not matter what unlock method you use the phone auto dails back the failed call. I use iPhone 5 with finger print to unlock and this is whenit auto dails..
Maybe if you bothered to read the thread you posted in, you would have realized it's about MISSED CALLS, not failed calls, and the rest of us would have understood what you meant. (Better yet, you would have started or posted in the appropriate thread.)
In the peculiar instance where you don't want to redial a failed call, simply don't select the "Redial" button. Redialing is NOT automatic
