One machine doesn't recognise the other

I want to migrate data from my MBP to an iMac using ethernet cable but neither machine recgnises the other. MBP is running Mavericks and iMac is running Mount Lion. What can I try?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

Hi,

Is this via a router ?

Or by two standalone machines and one Ethernet cable (no other network) ?

If via a router do you have the Show Share option enabled in the Finder's Preferences > Side Bar ?

In System Preferences > Sharing > File Sharing is the access allowed ?

If Bonjour Shares are not showing up in the Finder's Side Bar check this out

You may also want to enable SMB in the advanced Button of File Sharing in the Sharing in System Preferences.

You may also want to check System Preferences > Network and see if they have IP addresses in the same range (the first three should be the same)

Hi,

I may well be off line when you post again as it is late where IM am.

It will be some while before I reply to further posts.

Others may jump in with some ideas.

Do you know that the cable is ok? For example if you use that cable to connect one of the Macs to your router, does the Mac report ethernet is active?

I would check the cable and the ports. The exercise above, done with each computer, will establish that.

And if the cable and ports check out, and still no success connecting the Macs, I suggest you reset NVRAM on both Macs.

You don't say how old your machines are, but if they are older, you will need to use a cross-over ethernet cable instead of just a regular cable. Here is a link to an Apple knowledge base that outlines which machines can do an automatic crossover using a regular ethernet cable.

EDIT: Now that I reread the question, if your machines are new enough to run Mountain Lion and Mavericks it's unlikely that this is the problem.

Non volatile RAM stores user settings. A reset simply clears it out. More info here on this page. Note the list of settings given on the link I posted is not all inclusive. It does no harm. On older Macs, when it was called PRAM, we were constantly resetting it to fix some minor issue, like time and date for example.

A thought: if both Macs can communicate with the router, you could get a second cable and connect both Mac via the router.

Hi Eustace, thanks for your thoughts. I tried connecting both macs through the router - no success.

I looked at the article you suggested re NVRAM and saw this:

Note: OS X does not store network settings in NVRAM / PRAM. If you are troubleshooting a network issue, resetting it will not help.

As both machines are running OSX I decided against it.

I have also tried turning off the firewall but no success. I had a call in to Apple via their help desk in Manila but no response as yet.

It's very frustrating and I'm all out of ideas if someone else can shed some light on this I'd be very grateful....and I thought these things would be simple!!!
