Q: One machine doesn't recognise the other

I want to migrate data from my MBP to an iMac using ethernet cable but neither machine recgnises the other. MBP is running Mavericks and iMac is running Mount Lion. What can I try?

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.6.8)

    Hi Eustace,

Did this on both machines and in both cases the other shows up on the network.

That would suggest the problem is not the connection but Migration Assistant. Do you have to use it?

There are other tools for moving data. For example, Carbon Copy Cloner: http://www.bombich.com  It is not a wholesale transfer, you can select what you want to migrate.

From the Mac that will be the destination, connect to the source Mac. Then run CCC, next identify Source and Destination and follow CCC directions and select what you want to move.

p.s. I do not know the time in Auckland, but here in Toronto it's time for the last walk of the day for me and the dogs.

    Hope this goes well.

Thank you very much for your help Eustace, I wonder sometimes if these things are sent to try our patience. I will try CCC.

    Enjoy your walk.  Cheers.

    Hi,

How much stuff are we talking about ?

Have you tried other methods other than Migration Assistant ?  (Although your used the word "migrate" in the original question I did not get the impression you were using the app to do it).

Whilst not an ideal would a large flash drive provide a workaround ?

Hi Ralph, Thanks for that. I eventually found my way though to the iMac Directory Editor and re- structured some of the information in there, then re-checked the server connections, all OK, but still no go. Then I removed the firewall and re-checked, still no go - then I removed the apple ID from the users in preferences on both machines and hey presto, it linked.  V. Strange.  Then with file sharing as I could read the files from the MBP on the iMac I copied many of them. So Some of my problem is solved.  I am now about to look at using a flash drive to copy over some of the software I have downloaded direct so hopefully I can get it all done.  Frustrating that the Migration Assistant didn't seem to want to help at all so I must have missed some small but salient point in its use.  Anyway, bulk of my problem is now solved and thanks again for your help.
