Q: iMac 2008 running very slow after Mavericks upgrade

Hi everyone,

I upgraded to Mavericks not long after it was released and my machine has been struggling since.  It's very slow for normal everyday computing - and I actually had to stop using certain programs, like Chrome.  Chrome would get stuck just trying to load google - and I would get stuck with a spinning beach ball for upwards of 5 minutes.  I've switched to Safari and that's helped - but when switching applications, the system still really struggles.  It makes multi-tasking very challening.

I downloaded EtreCheck, could anyone help me out to interpret the results?  Is there anything I can do to speed things up?

Thanks!

It looks as if you a running two virtualization software packages.

Parallels Desktop AND VMWare Fusion. Should not be using two of these. Pick one and uninstall the other per instructions on the developer's website.

PACE software is also, problematic. Unistall this per the instructions on the developer's website.

CrashPlan could be causing issues if you have this backup software trying to backup data while you are using your Mac. Configure CrashPlan to only backup data during times where you are away fron your Mac for extended periods of time.

Both Google Chrome and Drive currently do not play well with OS X Mavericks. Uninstall these per the instructions on Google's website and make sure the Google keystone agent is uninstalled with it.

You may need to update all of your third party software if there are OS X Mavericks updates that can be applied. You may need to, ACTUALLY, go the third party developers' websites if there are no updates through the Mac App Store.

Update all of your Web browser Internet plugins and extensions.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.

Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select

    View Show Log List

    from the menu bar.

Click the Clear Display icon in the toolbar. Then try the action that you're having trouble with again. Select any messages that appear in the Console window. Copy them to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination command-C. Paste into a reply to this message (command-V).

When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.

Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.

Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.

Thanks everyone!  I will start with the tips and steps above and then load Console and post the appropriate log messages.
