Why isn't my iPhone5 charging? the battery isn't turning green

I just brought a new iPhone5 and it's not charging at all. I'm using the apple charger for it now. but it's been off for awhile now so I'm going to wait to see if its going to come back on in a few hours. when I press the sleep button, it says tht the battery is still red and it hasn't moved a bit. so idk if its charging or not.

Hi DivineAngel,

Thanks for visiting Apple Support Communities.

Be sure to try these steps if your iPhone is not charging:

If your battery doesn't charge, or if your device shows a low-battery image, black screen, or "accessory not supported" alert, follow these steps.

  1. Inspect the connector at the bottom of the phone:
    • Make sure that there are no bent pins in the connector.
    • Make sure that the connector is free from debris.
    • If there are bent pins or debris, please contact Apple Support.
    • Otherwise, continue troubleshooting.
  2. Make sure that the outlet you're using works.
  3. Make sure that the Apple USB cable and Apple USB power adapter work.
  4. Plug the device in to power and let it charge for up to 30 minutes. If you don't have an Apple USB power adapter, try connecting to a computer's high-power USB 2.0 port (not a keyboard). The computer must be on.
  5. If the device still exhibits an issue, try turning your device off and then on again while connected to power.
  6. If the issue is persists, please contact Apple Support.

I actually have the same problem. My 5S is about 9 months old. Just yesterday it stopped charging. I've tried 3 different adapters, outlets, restarted my phone a few times. Then I plugged it into my computer, it backed-up my phone just fine but it refused to charge. I then brought the phone into an Apple Store. I originally bought my phone in London, but I've recently relocated to Shanghai, and the "genius" told me that my phone would NOT be warranted in China because "it's out of the region". If I need to get any help at all I would have to go home. The Apple call center was actually more helpful. They said that unless the phone was bought in Hong Kong, Macau, or China, it will not be warranted in the mainland China region. So the closest place for me to get my iPhone 5S serviced would be in Hong Kong, which is a 2 hours flight from where I am right now.

Is there ANY other way that I can fix the phone myself like right now? because flying to Hong Kong or London over night would not be an option and my phone is about to run out of battery...

I have had continuous problems with the charging plug on my iPhone 5. I would plug it in and have nothing happen. I'd flip it over jiggle it and sometimes it would charge and other times it would not. Then I saw a YouTube video where a guy took a toothbrush and wet it, flicked most of the moisture off with his thumb and then scrubbed out the charging hole. I did this and it actually worked for me. However, the next day when I went to charge it again, I had the same problem. He seemed to think that the scrubbing with the toothbrush was cleaning it out and that was the solution. My conclusion - it wasn't the cleaning but rather the moisture that initiates the charging connection.

SOLUTION: If you plug in your iPhone 5 and you are getting no reaction, pull the plug and wet the tiny end that goes into the iPhone with your tongue. Plug it back in and it see if it works. Obviously I can't speak to all of the possible causes of an iPhone 5 not taking a charge, but after months of annoying failure to connect when plugged in, getting some moisture on the end of the plug has worked for me every single time. I am curious if others achieve similar success.

I have a 5S, my phone wasn't charing and the plug wasn't sitting correctly in the slot. After a lengthy investigation I discovered a really small piece of rubber lodged in the back of the slot. I used a miniature screwdriver to remove it, and the phone began charging as usual.

Later that day, however, it stopped charging again. I tried the wetting tip and it worked! I just lightly (LIGHTLY!) dabbed the end of the connector to the tip of my tongue and voila it worked.

Good call JBSNH. Thanks so much for the idea
