Thoughts on Lojack for laptops

I am going to college in a few weeks and am concerned with the security of my Macbook Pro. I've been considering getting Lojack for Laptops. However, I'm concerned about whether it might slow down my computer, and how (i assume) Lojack has access to the computer, and you can never be sure if you completely uninstall it. I was just wondering what your thoughts/concerns were about this software.

Personally, I don't really like the idea of a program on my computer that's constantly tracking my location and talking to the mothership everytime I boot up. I have enough problems with what the NSA is doing and go to lengths to secure everything from them, so I'm certainly not going to pay to have a private company to the same thing (as far as tracking me goes). And honestly, I just don't think it's worth it.

For about the same amount of money you'd pay for Lojack, you can get yourself an insurance policy that'll give you $2000-3000 in general insurance to cover all the things you bring with you to college. So long as you keep all your vital data backed up (which you should be doing regardless), I believe this is a much wiser investment.

Yes, it's much less likely that you'll ever see your laptop again, but you'll also be fully reimbursed for the cost TO REPLACE your laptop. That was a very key thing for me: if LoJack doesn't recover your laptop, they'll only give you back your subscription fee; insurance will give you the amount needed to buy a replacement, not just the depreciated cash value of the stolen laptop. And since this is a general insurance policy, it'll cover anything else that might be stolen from your room, not just your laptop.

So, even though LoJack might have a high recovery rate, do you really want to risk being in that other group and being out $2000+ on a MBP? I think not. Above all else, get insurance.
