Is there a way to save screen controls and mappings & assignments with a patch? Thanks!

How can you import patches in such a way that the screen controls and mappings & assignments come with it? There must be a way so that I don't have to rebuild every time. I tried copying and pasting screen controls, but that doesn't save much time if you have to rebuild all the assignments. Could someone tell me what I'm missing? Thanks very much.
