More USB ports
I needed more USB ports on my iMac, so I purchased a Belkin Model# F4U041 powered & port unit but not everything works that's connected to it. ex: printer..
Any Ideas?
iPod touch, Mac OS X (10.5)

As an example, my printer's manual states that it has to be connected directly to the computer - that is an Epson. Did you check your printer's setup instructions?
Try using the USB external Belkin Model to other computers if it work. If it work then that kind of external USB port is not compatible with the iMac and if it is not working to other computers then the model is defective.
99% of USB hubs are pure and refined trash, are unreliable.
Its no surprise it doesnt work.
Babowa, the printer did work when I first used the hub. Then I had to plug it directly into my computer.
tyron1980, I only have the iMac. But I'll try a friends if they don't mind.
PlotinusVeritas, I'm beginning to believe you...what do you use?
I dont use external USB hubs.
not using a port, disconnect something and insert what you need. etc. etc.
Course, you can use a USB hub with an external hard drive and learn the hard way about signal degradation and power drops on your vitally important data.
However Id suggest thats a horrific premise.
Always better to ask Should you than Could you
I don't use external USB hubs.
I agree completely with Plotinus harsh words.
Especially now when we have USB2 on older computers and USB3 on newer computers the issues arise are even ofter, "backwards compatible" or not.
Yea That's what I figured I'd have to do. What a pain in the ***. I have printer, Hard drive backup and chargers for iPhone, mini Ipad, iPad Air and wireless speakers. Some cahrge and some I have to keep moving around.
Thanks Potinus
Yea Lex. I agree with Poltius too. Thanks
plotinus
is it the fact that the 5 v output of the USB isn't "strong" enough to "power-supply" more than one device ?
In other words, if only one device is plugged in at a time, is a USB hub safe ?
No, even when the own power of the USB router is on, the same problems are there.
thanks lex
i'm using a non-powered "squid-USB", simply to avoid having to turn around my iMac each time i want to plug in a USB memory stick. I just can't see where something can go wrong in "parallel-connecting" a few wires ?
What am i missing ?
depending on the quality of the product.
the usb port of the macs is mostly somewhere of 0.5-1.2 Amps at 5V. So depending on the "things" you hang on, they already suffocate soon. The more so with a hub without own power.
And the quality of hubs is also often... read Plotinus.
