Why does my cloud shut off by itself causing me to lose my contacts and photo streams temporarily?

This has been consistently happening to my girlfriend's iPhone and now just started with mine today. At first we thought it was to do with our daughter dropping her phone, but mine has never been dropped. Could this be an operating system update issue?
