Edit and save .avi or .mov video files in iphoto library

Dear All

After importing multiple photos & videos from various devices (iphones, cameras...) some video files comes natively in .avi format...

Very often, video files (either .mov or .avi) are not yet int the proper lenght, and it is very useful and space saving to cut video files.

1/ To edit video files (either .mov or .avi ...) in iphoto, i cannot find any tool to edit a video...

2/ You can go back to event / select the video and then reveal in finder, then open the video file in quicktime X

3/ In quicktime X you can trim the video file and delete the part you do not want anymore, but :

- even in .mov or .avi, you cannot save the new edited video file

- you have to save as, and you cannot then replace the file stored in : iphotolibrary/master/year/month/....

- so you can save the file anywhere and then drag and drop the new file in : iphotolibrary/master/year/month/......

- but then you cannot in iphoto import a file already stored in the library

- and if you import a new file, then you have a new event (and then the loss of the original date / place... usefull tags)

So is there a more SIMPLE and efficient way to edit & save a video file stored in iphoto library ?

Regards

Alexandre

If all you want to do is to trim, i.e. crop, the length of the video you can do it in iPhoto 9.4.3 or 9.5. It's a pretty basic trim function, cropping frames from the beginning and end of the movie.

1 - click on the movie in iPhoto to begin playing it.

2 - click anywhere in the iPhoto window to bring up the movie control panel and click on the gear icon:

User uploaded file

3 - select Trim from the contextual menu.

4 - select the left and right yellow handles and move to where you can to crop the video.

5 - to save the cropped version outside of iPhoto drag it's thumbnail to the Desktop from the iPhoto window. The cropped version can be added to other apps via the Media Browser.

6 - use the Photos ➙ Revert to Original menu option to return to the full movie version.
