Q: 30 pin lightning converter suddenly not working properly in my car

I have a Hyundai Veracruz that has the Hyundai cord that you plug into your phone and can play music/podcasts through the speakers while charging the phone.  Of course, when I traded in my iphone 4s for the 5s a few weeks back, I had the problem that the Hyundai cord was compatible with the 30 pin plug.  I ended up getting the lighning to 30 pin adapter (not the one with the cord, the regular little one.  I tried the corded lighting to 30 pin adapter first because of the issue with the regular lightning to 30 pin adapter not working if an iphone is in its case, but that product didn't work at all).  Anyway, it had been working totally fine-- recognizing the iphone as soon as I plugged it in, playing my music through the speakers, charging it, allowing me to use the controls on my steering wheel to skip songs if I wanted-- until this morning. When I plugged it in this morning, my radio didn't turn on automatically like it always has before.  Instead, when I turned it on manually and went to the auxilary mode it just says connected instead of ipod detected or whatever it used to say.  The good news is that it still plays through the speakers and charges, but I can't use the controls on the steering wheel and clearly something is wrong.  Any ideas?

iPhone 5s, iOS 7.0.6
