usb 3.0 drive incorrectly recognized file system

I am new to OS-X (Maverics), not new to *NIX

Patriot Supersonic 32 GB USB 3.0 flash drive (PRF32GSUSB) - unable to use in its current state. When trying to mount it, the displayed format is showing Linux, not FAT-32 as it shows when plugged into one of my Linux machines. Sure, I may have used gparted to reformat it at one point, not sure. It is really just an inconvenience, but worry other drives will turn up that way in the future. One fix is probably to let OS X format it, but that could be a real pain if several drives end up with the same problem.

Is there something simple which I am overlooking?

Next on the list of things to do is add support for more filesystems.

It is a nice fast drive, and this new Macbook is only my second system with USB 3.0 support. I'm really looking forward to taking advantage of the speed.

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)
