When I click on "Download" in Apple store to upgrade my Snow Leopard to Mavericks, the X goes to the dock and just says "waiting"....it's been saying that for over an hour now. Help!

I'm trying to download and install the free upgrade to Mavericks from Snow Leopard. When I click on "Download" in Apple store the X flies down to the dock and there just says "Waiting"....it's been saying that for over an hour now. Nothing is installing or prompting me to do anything. Any suggestions?
