Convert the footage from tha camera to ProRes for use in FCP-7, then import the files.
You can convert the Canon files via Compressor or a third party app like Red Giant Bulletproof:
http://www.redgiant.com/products/all/bulletproof/
or use an editor that will accept the files directly such as FCP-X or Premiere Pro.

I'm using FCP-6. I will be renting the Canon for a weekend and need to have the download info down so to speak, as I have 2 shoots, so, I use Apple pro res 422 progressive HQ setting in compreesor.
Does the footage come off the Canon as a series of files or like a contents file which comes off Panasonic HVX P2 cards..and once it's compressed how will the files look, do I use a log and transfer import to get them in the project. Any special settings in Final Cut on import?

Catherine.
It does have a card structure, and I do always recommend keeping that card structure, for the chance that you use an NLE at some point that needs that structure. FCP 6 does not. Buried in there, in the DCM folder, are Quicktime files...in the H.264 codec. FCP doesn't edit those natively, so you need to convert. But FCP 6 and even 7 can't convert those via Log and Transfer...because the camera is too new, FCP doesn't see the card structure.
Convert the files to ProRes 422, HQ is overkill for this format...the camera shoots 8-bit H.264 files and the only thing you'll gain with HQ over 422 is file size. Use ProRes 422.
And once you convert, just drag into the project, or FILE>IMPORT. Organize them properly on your media drive first, of course. Put them in folders that you organize in the manner you want.
isn't there a canon plug in that allows fcp7 to use log and transfer with some of the canon dslr's. Not that you can't just use compressor, but the serious advantage of using log and transfer is that if you lose your media drive, but have the cards backed up, fcp will be able to recapture your material automatically if the cards are mounted in the log and transfer window.
yup

and it also works in fcp6 according to Canon
That plugin doesn't support the Canon Mark III...the camera DBLewis has. L&T doesn't work with the Mark III.
I'm not sure which upsets me more, the fact that I'm wrong or that you're right.
